In the winter the village held a holiday-light program that yielded about $200. That spinach was used to purchase the new white oak tree, which is the Illinois’ state tree.
A major part of the fete was the introduction of a new garden club in Niles. Club president Athena Columbus spoke about the league.
The original garden club in Niles was created in 1944 with the purpose of beautifying the village, but that club is defunct. The inception of the new organization gets gardening enthusiasts back in tread.
