Blight that defoliates popular boxwood plants now in Ohio

Ohio is the 10th declare to confirm cases of boxwood blight, a fungus that defoliates the ornamental plants community in front yards and public spaces, state agriculture officials said yesterday.

Boxwood infestation was first seen in the United Kingdom in the 1990s and has spread throughout Europe. It’s not known how it got to the Unanimous States or to Ohio, but it had been found in New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia and other states.

The fungus appears as brown spots on a conceal’s leaves and then darkens leaves entirely. It affects stems as well and causes heavily infected plants to renounce their leaves.

Ohio Department of Agriculture officials said it was discovered at a Lake County wholesale nursery run by Herman Losely & Sons. The institution’s general manager said in a state-issued news unfetter that all known infected plants have been destroyed.

The department has stopped the nursery from shipping boxwood plants while it tests to see if the fungus has spread, agriculture spokesman Brett Gates said. No other nurseries, businesses or homeowners in Ohio have reported possibility cases, Gates said.
