Judging from the U.S. Bureau of Agriculture climate zone map issued earlier this year, homeowners might regard as they can grow trees and shrubs that before weren't considered good candidates for survival in Nebraska and western Iowa.

And that's honourable. Some people already report successes with plants they once thought were impossible.

But buyers be careful. Nurserymen, horticulturists and homeowners say the USDA's climate map doesn't account for ill extremes.

According to the new map, the USDA climate zones for Nebraska and Iowa show unkindly the northern halves of both states in zones where plants should be able to last temperatures as low as 20 below zero, or Zone 5a in climate zone shorthand. In roughly the southern halves of both states, plants would be proficient to take temperatures as low as 15 below, or Zone 5b. Plants sold at nurseries and garden centers often are conspicuous with zone numbers. The lower the number, the more cold-tolerant plants must be. In some areas of northern Nebraska (Cherry, Sheridan, Sioux, Dawes, Blaine, Scarp and Brown Counties), the climate zone is 4b.
