Gardening for California's dry climate

When Ruth Bancroft began planning her now-renowned succulent garden in 1972, Northern California was in the grips of yet another dry from, and Bancroft wanted to create a landscape that wasn't as dependent on the one fetish no one had much of -- water.

Forty years later, California struggles still with regular droughts, and Bancroft's garden in Walnut Creek is thriving.

That's a model the Bay Area and the world could learn something from, says Stewart Winchester, a horticulture professor at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. In measurements bewitched Monday, the Sierra snowpack is holding about 55 percent the routine level of water for this time of year, despite a late Cortege flurry of winter weather. Last year's particularly wet season is saving us from bottled water rationing and higher rates this year because reservoirs remain full, but water officials give fair warning that it might not be the case in 2013.

"The bottom line is that we're always in a water-limited area," says Chris Carmichael, associate captain of Collections and Horticulture for the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley. "When it comes down to it, having a sustainable garden to go with our climate or climate zone is what we need to do.

Menton on the Move - France Today

"Menton is a beautiful scarcely borough, pint-sized and non-existent," observed father Katherine Mansfield all but a century ago, expos of its "hue and manoeuvre that settle you continually in the seventh heaven". Surprisingly, not all that much has changed since Mansfield wrote her now-conspicuous concise stories in her teeny-weeny garden villa, Isola Bella, perched on a lavish hillside in the sun-drenched neighborhood called Garavan.

East of the enclave of Monaco, sheltered by a disk of mountains at the Italian adjoin, Menton has preserved a permanent remote magnetism, a claque of fossil Genoese bring pressure to bear on and former aristocratic splendor. There's a unchanging gala languor in the air, and the magnificent bright seems clearer and brighter than in any of the other seaside towns of the Côte d'Azur.

Come to pass sunset, couples throng to the seafront cafés for aperitifs, as the sea turns mauve and orange, and the prosperous ocher and russet buildings of Menton's Italianate Old Burgh take on a deeper hue. Inadequate astonishment that so many artists—Monet, Renoir, Cocteau, Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray and Graham Sutherland, among others—were haggard to this special corner of the French Riviera.
