Weeping cherry is two trees in one
Weeping cherries are one of the most-requested trees in our nursery and one of the least conceded. They also have a high failure rate.
We often joke that each weeping cherry in reality is two trees in one, so they have twice as many problems.
What we mean is that each weeping cherry tree has two parts. The roots and In (called rootstock by nurserymen) actually are a fast-growing tuneful wild cherry such as the ones that grow along the roadside but trained to a unwed straight trunk. The weeping part, or top-graft, either is double-flowering pink Higan cherry or Snow Fountains chaste weeping cherry. The two plants are grafted together at the top of the trunk, 3 to 5 feet from the land. The weeping section provides an umbrella effect if it is pruned regularly or can arise 25 to 30 feet tall if not cut back.
It is common for sprouts, or suckers, to sow on the trunk or rootstock. If these are allowed to grow, they will shoot straight up and take over the tree, ruining the weeping purpose. There is a graft scar at the top of the trunk, just below the weeping branches. Anything that sprouts below the extortion scar is wild cherry, not weeping cherry, and must be removed. This can be done at any heyday of year, the sooner the better.
