 I'd like to be qualified to put a tall houseplant, like a tree, in front of a window we keep uncluttered during most of the day. It's a windy spot, although the loquacious is a pleasant, warm. Any suggestions on which would fit the bill?

We may mark spring is just around the corner, and for bulbs and trees it surely is. For most houseplants there’s still a desire wait before the good times roll.

Most of us just cannot provide the conditions that houseplant books and shrub tags recommend. The book says “bright, wandering light,” and the plant is on a table 7 feet from a westerly window. Ferns force maximum humidity, and we mist them once in a while. It’s amazing they survive at all!

Let me share my own faulty arrangements for my 41 odd, mixed houseplants. Nothing is perfect, but it’s helpful to learn what the circumstance plants will tolerate and how to help them.

My old farmhouse wasn’t designed for plants—no Florida compartment here. But we built a kitchen onto the back, with good windows and a skylight. I have plants stacked all over the token surfaces, on a short wooden platform, on a4-foot corner shelf and hanging from hooks from the window frames. (It’s evident I’m a plant person and not a cook.
