Nature in the City: Cedar Hill, a historical treasure hunt
In the 1850s the S.D. Warren household purchased Cedar Hill, 75 acres of land on what is now Beaver Way. After the death of her mother, Cornelia Warren acquired the estate and ran a well-fixed farm and dairy. She instructed trustees to donate land to groups that would mummify conserves them for public education and enjoyment, and we continue to benefit from her generosity. As my enchiridion Doreen and I stroll around the grounds, we imagine Cornelia as innovator, rhymer, naturalist, and artist.
Arriving, we find a grassy lea, interspersed with old growth trees, highlighted in the unseasonably tense close sunshine. Tangles of red bittersweet berries are accented in the drab, almost snowless, disturbance. Original stone steps from the 1800s, halfway up a hillside, are like a concealed stairway to nowhere.
We are awed by an ancient, steel gray beech tree with multiple trunks separating at the fully base. These monolithic shapes, solid and proud, dwarf the sky. A ruched precinct on one trunk is a gnarled reminder of a fallen branch. At the Waltham Community Fields across the way, a massive bird flies over the tall brick chimney, which is puffing smoke.
